The 10-piece West End Composers Collective began in 2003 as a monthly gathering of some of Brisbane’s creative improvising musicians, composers and arrangers to workshop original compositions and new and exciting arrangements. Their name stemming from the vibrant Brisbane suburb that allowed them to establish a presence.
West End Composers Collective has since released two studio recordings featuring original material, performed at many well known Jazz Festivals and toured nationally across Australia. Composers that contributed to their debut album “Downstream” include Laura Kahle, Isaac Hurren, and Kristin Berardi. Their follow up album “Driving Hat” focused on the works of saxophonist Rafael Karlen, and also featured vocalists Megan Washington and Hannah Macklin. Musical direction has been shared over the year between Laura Kahle, Steve Newcomb, and Rafael Karlen. The personnel that have rotated through the ensemble are a who’s who of players and composers on the Brisbane music scene.
Their appearance at Doo-bop will be their first in 2017, and the first in a few years. Don’t miss this rare chance to hear original small/large ensemble music played by some of Brisbane’s finest.
