For this special show Julien will be reconnecting with Steve Newcomb and playing for the first time with the young rhythm team of McIntosh and Jansz. They will perform a selection of Wilson’s originals from his two quartet albums, This Is Always and This Narrow Isthmus (both released on his own Lionsharecords label). This Is Always, ostensibly a collection of standard jazz ballads, won an unprecedented three Australian Jazz “Bell” Awards in 2014. The following album, This Narrow Isthmus focussed on more upbeat, swinging, original material. Lionsharecords have also released an album by Julien’s long standing trio with Steve Grant and Stephen Magnusson, David Ades final recording from New York, and John Scurry’s debut album.
Julien performs regularly in a range of jazz styles from New Orleans through the avant garde and is featured on award winning albums by Barney McAll, Stu Hunter, Jonathan Zwartz, Kristin Berardi & Ben Salter. He has performed and recorded with Allan Browne, Charlie Haden, Bernie McGann, Kurt Elling, Hermeto Pascoal, Mike Nock, James Carter, Jim Black, Archie Roach, Gavin Bryars and AVENTA, Paul Kelly, Hugh Masekala, Brian Wilson, TrueLive, Paul Grabowsky, Thirsty Merc, Vince Jones, 12ToneDiamonds, Ishish, Festa, SNAG, Assumptions and the AAO, MSO & SSO.
